Plot: Dhruthi (Nisha Ravikrishnan) is a former college professor who is trapped in a controlling marriage. When she receives a desperate call from Anshu, her former student, she has to find strength to confront the villain. But, who is Anshu really?
Review: Anshu, a solo thriller that has only one character throughout the film, is a dream debut for any actor. Nisha Ravikrishnan, who is known for her roles on the small screen, makes good use of the red carpet laid out for her.
Dhruthi (Nisha Ravikrishnan), a former college professor, is battling anxiety after a miscarriage. Her controlling and unsympathetic husband, Ravi, only adds to her woes. Loneliness, isolation and her inability to get any support from outside, further pushes Dhruthi down, mentally. When suffocating in silence, she gets a call from Anshu, her former student, who says she has been kidnapped. Can Dhruthi help Anshu, or is it really Anshu who is helping Dhruthi. Who really is Anshu?
At its core, Anshu is a well-told story of a suppressed, pained woman who goes on a journey to rediscover her purpose in life. The movie, which sets off as a journey to help save a fellow woman, is ultimately about self-discovery. With practical themes rarely touched upon, including the mental health of a woman, director MC Channakeshava, impresses with a unique story telling.
In 2005, Baraguru Ramachandrappa’s film, Shanti, entered the Guinness Book of World Records for featuring only one actor, Bhavana, throughout the film. Anshu is also a similar attempt by the debutant filmmaker Channakeshava. The other characters in Anshu are portrayed only through voices and shadows. What sets this film apart is, unlike solo films that are set in remote places, Anshu takes place in a bustling urban setting, with the solo focus being the journey of a woman.
Nisha’s performance is the solo purpose of Anshu, and she grabs the opportunity with both hands. With a subtle-yet-strong performance, she aces every scene with her natural on-screen presence. Her interactions with other characters are very believable.
Anshu is a well-made thriller with minor flaws here and there.
