Anpodu Kanmani is a slice-of-life drama that feels familiar, echoing many stories Malayalam cinema has already explored. Directed by debutant Liju Thomaz, the film offers a grounded portrayal of societal expectations and family dynamics, presenting itself as a watchable, albeit unremarkable, addition to the genre. Yet, amidst the wave of blood-soaked thrillers and avant-garde narratives, this straightforward tale of ordinary lives feels like a breath of fresh air.

The story follows Nakulan (Arjun Ashokan) and Shalini (Anagha Narayanan), a newlywed couple navigating early marital pressures. Shalini, in particular, struggles under the weight of societal questions about "good news." The narrative takes a dramatic turn when she retaliates against a nosy aunt, bringing her frustrations to a boiling point.

What sets Anpodu Kanmani apart is its nuanced exploration of Shalini's psyche, capturing her journey through love, frustration, and self-expression. Anagha Narayanan is the heart of the film, delivering an understated yet powerful performance. Arjun Ashokan complements her well as the supportive husband torn between his wife and family expectations.

Aneesh Koduvali's screenplay captures societal quirks through well-etched characters, and Liju balances humor and emotion effectively. The music by Samuel Aby and Ranjith Meleppat adds depth to the film's emotional core.

Anpodu Kanmani may not reinvent the wheel, but its honest storytelling and relatable characters make it worth a watch.
