Story: Vishnu, a brilliant engineering graduate with back papers, hacks into the security system of a company owned by his ex-girlfriend's father. What begins as a petty act of revenge gradually evolves into a personal vendetta, spiraling into something more obsessive and psychotic

Review: I Am Kathalan (2024), directed by Girish AD, marks a departure from his previous works like Premalu, Super Sharanya, and Thanneer Mathan Dinangal, which were known for their comedic touch and light-hearted narratives. This film, however, takes a more serious, thought-provoking direction, exploring themes of ethical hacking, data privacy, and redemption. The story follows Vishnu (Naslen K Gafoor), an engineering graduate with back papers who hacks into his ex-girlfriend’s father’s company out of anger and revenge. As the plot unfolds, Vishnu transitions from reckless vengeance to a deeper understanding of the consequences of his actions.

Girish has a tendency to portray aimless male protagonists, often characterised by their obsession with pursuing their girlfriends, neglecting their studies, future and personal growth in the process. This theme runs through I Am Kadhalan, but here it is explored with more depth, focusing on Vishnu’s emotional conflict and eventual redemption. While this shift adds complexity, the film’s slow pace and emphasis on his internal journey may feel drawn out for some viewers, particularly those expecting the faster-paced entertainment of Girish’s previous films.

Naslen gives a solid performance as Vishnu, capturing the character's emotional growth, while the supporting cast, including Anishma Anilkumar, Lijomol Jose, and Dileesh Pothan, complements the lead. Sharan Velayudhan’s cinematography and Sidhartha Pradeep’s music further enhance the film’s serious tone.

Overall, I Am Kathalan offers a fresh, serious take on the genre, but its slow pace and focus on emotional depth may not engage all viewers.
