Jolly O Gymkhana Movie Synopsis:

Jolly O Gymkhana Movie Review: Jolly O Gymkhana starts with a voiceover that states that the film's target is to create laughter rather than look for logic. With this, the makers create an excuse of a reason for the logical loopholes and the lack of coherence throughout the film. But even when we set aside the logic factor, the answer to the question whether the film manages to generate laughter is a big 'No'.

The film follows the lives of a family consisting of a mother, Chellamma (Abhirami), and her three daughters, Bhavani, Yazhani, and Shivani (Madonna Sebastian). The entire story is played out when Shivani narrates what happened in her life to a priest (Yogi Babu). This priest character as well as a plethora of other characters seem to be incorporated in the film just so as to have as many comedy artistes as possible rather than to service the plot.

Jolly O Gymkhana shows that just having women as central characters in a film doesn't make one a pro-woman movie. A series of utterly senseless and outright vulgar jokes don't help its case. It's truly concerning that our filmmakers still indulge in such crass and misogynistic comments in their films in the name of comedy.

The basic premise of the movie is something that piques your interest, and, even with all the criticism, there are moments here and there that genuinely make you laugh, but these moments are so few and far in between. At one point in the film, a man trying to court a woman tells her something along the lines, ‘If I can't get an Aishwarya Rai, can I at least get an Aishwarya Rajesh?’ If this was supposed to make us laugh, then the makers have terribly failed in their mission. There is also a comedy track with a man who interchangeably uses 'va' and 'tha' when he is speaking. If that's not all, caste pride is played out in the film for laughs. Throughout the film, there are instances where we wonder whether the makers even have a basic level of awareness.

Adding to all these, none of the actors register well. Each actor’s performance is at a different pitch, which leads us to second guess whether each of them belongs to a different film. Even though we have a corpse as the male protagonist, the film finds ways to make him fight and dance along with the much younger female lead. While the action sequence works better, the dance number between Prabhudeva and Madonna called Police Kaarana Kattikitta pops up on screen out of nowhere!

If you want to hear outdated and problematic jokes one after the other, this film might be exactly what you are looking for. But otherwise, it completely lets down its intriguing basic premise and capable artistes.
