Niram Marum Ulagil Movie Review: Mother knows best, but Niram Marum Ulagil knows loudest—crafting four stories so emotionally overwrought they might as well come with complimentary handkerchiefs. This anthology follows ticket examiner Yogi Babu during a train journey as he narrates tales of parental devotion to a young woman (Lovelyn). The fifth story, presumably, is Yogi Babu’s own.
The stories have potential: Malik (Natty, effective) grapples with his mother’s past as a sex worker; Rio Raj’s Athiyan contemplates desperate measures to fund his mother’s cancer treatment; Bharathiraja and Vadivukkarasi play elderly parents mistreated by their sons; and Sandy’s auto driver forms an unexpected bond with elderly Tulasi.
At 146 minutes, these tales outstay their welcome. Characters don’t experience emotions—they perform them with theatrical abandon, leaving little room for audiences to connect. The film operates under the belief that more tears equal more impact.
The cinematography by Mallika Arjun and Manikanda Raja provides visual interest across diverse settings, while Dev Prakash Regan’s score occasionally finds moments of restraint amid the emotional crescendos.
With its talented ensemble cast, Niram… had all the ingredients for a moving anthology. A more nuanced approach might have delivered the emotional punch the film so earnestly wants us to feel.
